California buying process
The exact 10 steps from first message to insured-and-driving-home.
- 1
Meet in a public place
Bank parking lot, large grocery store, police station lobby. Daylight. Bring a friend if possible.
- 2
Verify the seller's ID
Driver's license must match the name on the title. If not, walk away — no exceptions.
- 3
Test drive (use the inspection checklist)
Don't skip the highway portion. Don't skip the cold-start. Take your time.
- 4
Negotiate
Anchor low, with a reason. Be friendly. Be patient. Cash + same-day pickup is your leverage.
- 5
Fill out the title (REG 138 + REG 262 if needed)
Both buyer and seller sign. Buyer takes the pink slip. Seller keeps a copy.
- 6
Bill of sale
Two copies, both sign. Includes VIN, odometer, agreed price, and date. Download below.
- 7
Payment
Cash or Zelle preferred. Avoid large Venmo. Cashier's checks only with same-bank verification.
- 8
Take everything
2 keys, fobs, owner's manual, service records, head unit code, spare tire kit, registration card.
- 9
Drive to the DMV within 10 days
Use the DMV portal to make an appointment first. Bring title, smog cert, and ID.
- 10
Insurance before you drive home
Most insurers add a vehicle in 5 minutes by phone. Don't skip this — California requires it before you drive.
Bill of sale template
